Last week, Nick got some money for his birthday. He and his sister Mary went to a department store because he wanted to buy some toys. They don't go shopping in a department store very often, so Nick was very excited. There was so much to see and Nick was looking up, down, left, right, here, there, and everywhere. "The toys are on the sixth floor," said Mary. "Where are the elevators?" asked Nick. (p2)
The arrow started to flash and the bell went 'Bing'. The doors of the elevator opened. "Let's take this one! It's going up," said Mary. "Wow! Look at all the people! It's almost full," said Nick. There was an old lady, a young man, a boy, a young woman with a baby, and lots of other people. Nick and Mary are not very big so they squeezed into the elevator. The doors closed and the elevator went up. (p4)
'Bing' The elevator stopped at the second floor. The doors opened. It was so full of people. The young man got out. He was wearing a cool shirt and a pair of sunglasses. "Why is he wearing sunglasses?" asked Nick. "It isn't sunny." "Shhh!" said Mary. "Don't ask silly questions." The young man walked into the men's clothing department. The doors closed and the elevator went up. (p.6)

We Won the Cup by Dolphin Readers - 4th Level
May and David are at home on a rainy day. They are brother and sister. It's summer vacation. They are happy because they don't have to go to school, but they are sad because they can't go outside. It is wet and rainy. They look out the window at the gray clouds and the heavy rain. They are very bored. They wish the rain would go away. (p.2)
May and David are sitting on the sofa in the living room. "I hope it stops raining," says May. "Why?" asked David. "I have an important soccer game this afternoon," she says. "Why is it so important?" 'We're playing against Northcliff in the Cup Final," May answers. The Cup Final is the most important game of the year. The winner is the best team and gets the cup. (p.4)
May goes to her bedroom and brings back a soccer ball. "I need your help," says May. David looks at his sister. "Will you pay me to help you?" he asks. May shakes her head. "No, silly! We need an extra player on our team. One of our players hurt her leg and cannot run," May answers. "You want me to play with a bunch of girls! No way!" David does not want to play soccer with girls. (p.6)
May stands up and looks out the window. She asks her brother again. "Oh, please, David." David just smiles and shakes his head to say no. "There is no chance of me playing soccer for a girls' soccer team. Soccer is a girls' sport." "Boys play soccer, too. Please David!" David is holding his baseball. "I'm sorry, but I like to play baseball. That's a boys' sport." (p.8)
May sits next to her brother on the sofa. She's holding her soccer ball. "I think you are afraid to play soccer with girls," says May. David looks at May and says, "Me, afraid! I'm not afraid. I just don't like to play soccer. It's a girls' sport." "OK, David," says May. "We'll play with ten players then. Just wait and see, you'll be sorry." (p.10)
May is excited. It is not raining now, and she has an important soccer game to play. She starts to get ready for the soccer game. She puts the soccer ball in her bag and finds her soccer uniform. She has a yellow soccer shirt, blue shorts, and yellow socks. She just needs her soccer shoes. She has a new pair of shoes, but where are they? She finds them near the front door. Now she's ready to go. (p.12)
David doesn't want to stay inside. He wants to go out. David wants to play baseball with his neighbor, Alan. He's looking for his baseball bat, but he cannot find it. David never puts things away, so he often can't find his things. "Mom! Where's my bat?" he asks. "I don't know," she answers. David's mother doesn't play baseball, and she doesn't have his bat. (p.14)
David starts to look all over the house. He cannot remember where he put it. David looks behind the sofa in the living room, but it's not there. He looks under his bed in his bedroom, but it's not there. He looks in the cupboard in the basement, but it's not there. He looks, and looks, and looks. Finally, he finds it behind the kitchen door. Who put it there? But he's happy to find his bat. Now he is ready to go. Just then, the doorbell rings. (p.16)
David opens the door. There's a boy wearing a baseball cap and a baseball glove. It's Alan. He's David's neighbor, and the two boys are good friends. "Are you ready to go?" asked Alan. "Yes, let's play ball," says David. Alan looks at David. "Is your sister coming to play with us?" David shakes his head, "No, she is a girl. She's going to play soccer with her friends. Soccer is a girls' sport. Let's go!" The two boys walk to the park. (p. 18)
The rain has stopped and the sun is shining. It's time for May to go to the game. She puts on her soccer uniform and calls her mother. "It's time to go, Mom!" She looks great in her yellow shirt, blue shorts, and yellow socks. "OK, dear," says Mom, "I just need my keys." May gets her shoes and walks to the car. "She is feeling a little nervous. (p. 20)
May and her Mom drive to the park. When May gets to the soccer field, she sees her best friend, Jade. They are both wearing their beautiful team uniforms. They put on their soccer shoes, and carefully tie their laces. "I'm nervous, Jade. How about you?" asks May. "A little," says Jade. This is an important game, and the girls want to do well. The girls are now ready for the game. They run onto the field and take their places. (p.22)
All the players are ready. Peep! The whistle blows and the Cup Final begins. The players kick the ball, pass the ball, and head the ball to each other. Everybody wants the ball. "Don't touch the ball with your hands!" shouts the coach. It is a hard game. Both teams play well, but May's team only has ten players. (p.24)
At half time the score is 1-1. May's team has one goal, and Northcliff has one goal. It is a very exciting game. The players take a rest and drink some water. In the second half the players play well again. Both teams have good chances to score a goal. Two minutes from the end, Jade passes the ball to May and May kicks it past the goalkeeper into the goal. May and her teammates jump into the air. Well done May! (p.26)
Peep! The whistle blows! The final score is 2-1. May's team has won, and May scored the winning goal. "Hooray! We won the cup." May and Jade hold up the cup for everyone to see. The coach is happy. May's mother is happy. The players are all happy, too. They are the champions. "Just wait until David sees this cup," says May. She wants to show her brother that soccer is not a boring girls' sport. (p.28)
After the game, the coach gives the cup to May. The players all say goodbye to their teammates and to the Northcliff team. When May gets home she runs into the house. "Look, David! We won the cup." David looks at his sister. She's holding a beautiful, shiny cup. "Wow! That's great, May." "Thanks. I scored the winning goal." "Really! My sister is a soccer star. Next time I will play with you. Soccer is not a girls' sport. It's a cool sport. Well done." (p.30)

Students in Space
Greg and Ann are brother and sister. They are sitting at their desks at school. Greg and Ann are good students. They like to ask questions. "How does the moon fly?" they ask their teacher. "How do fireflies make fire?" Every day they ask so many questions. Where, who, why, what, and how. Questions, questions, all day long. (p.2)
Greg and Ann are at home. They are in the living room with their parents. Mother is reading a book and father is watching TV. "Why does an elephant have a long nose?" "Why do bats sleep upside down? "Ask your father," says mother. "Ask your mother," says father. Where, who, why, what, and how. They ask so many questions. (p.4)
Their mother and father cannot answer all their questions. "Let's go look for fireflies," says Greg. They walk out into the yard. It's night-time and it is dark outside. Greg has a flashlight. Ann follows Greg into the yard. "Wow! What are those lights?" "They are fireflies," says Greg. "Look at that big one!" say Ann. One light is bigger than the others. Is it a very big firefly? (p.6)
The light comes closer and closer. "It looks like a triangle," says Ann. "No, it's a circle," says Greg. "It's getting bigger and bigger." "It's not a firefly! What is it?" "It's a spaceship!" Greg and Ann point to the light in the night sky. What is it? Is it really a spaceship? They have many questions to ask. (p.8)
The light is very close now. Greg and Ann can see the spaceship. A light shines on the children. "Oh no!" says Greg. "What's happening?" "Why are we flying?" asks Ann. They are flying up to the spaceship. "Help me!" says Greg. "Help me!" says Greg. "Help me, too! says Ann. Up goes Greg. Up goes his sister. What's happening? Where are they going? Why? How? (p.10)
Ann and Greg are in the spaceship. They see two scary looking aliens. They have so many questions they want to ask. "Who are you?" asks Ann. "We are Zorgans." "Where are you from?" asks Greg. "We are from the planet Zorga." "Where are we?" asks Ann. Questions, and more questions. They ask so many questions. (p.12)
The aliens are scary. They're looking at Ann and Greg. They want to study them. They're planning what they want to do. "Why are you taking us?" asks Ann. "We want to..." "What do you want to do with us?" asks Greg. "We want to..." "When can we go home?" The children ask so many questions, and the aliens don't have time to answer them. (p.14)
Greg and Ann are not afraid of the scary aliens. They just want to ask more questions. "Where are we going?" asks Ann. "We're going to..." "How many Zorgans are there?" asks Greg. "There are..." "How's the weather in Zorga?" The aliens cannot finish their answers, because Greg and Ann don't stop asking questions. (p.16)
Greg and Ann look around the spaceship. It is full of interesting things to look at. Greg runs to the window. "Wow! What's this?" asks Greg. "It's a..." "What are these?" asks Ann. She pushes all the buttons. "They're..." "What's that over there?" asks Greg. Ask, ask, ask! They don't stop asking questions. The aliens don't know what to do. (p.18)
The children grab the alien's guns. "Are these laser guns?" asks Greg. "Yes..." "Do you ever use them?" asks Ann. "Can we try them?" "No. Don't touch that!" says the alien. Too late. Ann shoots off a laser. Watch out! (p.20)
The aliens cannot stop the children. They drive their spaceship back to planet Earth, and take the children home. "These children ask too many questions." says the aliens. They drop Greg and Ann back into their yard. "Let's go home." The aliens want to go back to Zorga now. "Hey!" shouts Greg. "Come back!" He wants to ask the aliens more questions. But Ann is very happy to be home. "You see," says Ann. "It is good to ask questions. (p.22)

Things That Fly
Sometimes I wish I was a bird. A bird has wings and a bird can fly. I would really love to fly. "What's that in the sky? It's not a bird. It's flying so high! Can this paper airplane fly that high? What about kites and hot-air balloons? Let's look at other things that can fly. (p.2)
Look at all these colorful kites. Hundreds of years ago, before we had balloons or airplanes, people flew kites. Chinese people made the first kites. They made kites from paper and bamboo. A kite needs wind and a very long piece of string to fly. Today you can see kites in the sky on windy days. People fly kites for fun, and because they look beautiful. Can you fly a kite? (p.4)
Do you know that hot air goes up? Cold air goes down, and hot air goes up. If you put hot air in a balloon, it goes up, too. Look at these balloons. Can you see people in the baskets under the balloons? They use fire to make the air hot. The hot air goes up into the balloon, and the balloon flies up into the sky. To come down, just turn the fire off. It's a fun way to fly. (p.6)
Wow! Look at this funny-looking balloon. Its shape looks a lit like a watermelon. This is not a hot-air balloon, it's an airship. The first airship flew in 1900. Airships had engines so they flew faster than hot-air balloons. Airships are full of gas. The gas is lighter than air so the airship can fly. Many years ago the biggest airships flew from Europe to America. (p.8)
People wanted to fly fast, so they built the airplane. The first airplanes looked like this. They had long wings, a big engine, and a propeller. They only carried one person. The Wright brothers flew the first airplane in 1903. They didn't fly very far, but today we can fly all around the world in airplanes. (p.10)
Today we use aircraft for many different things. We use them for travel, we use them for work, and we use them for fun. This airplane is landing on the water. It's called a seaplane. It can take people where cars cannot go. People use these seaplanes in places where they are many big lakes and not many roads. It's an exciting way to fly. (p.12)
This is hardworking airplane. It can carry four hundred people halfway around the world without stopping. It's called a jumbo jet because it is so big. It needs a lot of space to take off and land. A jumbo jet has four big engines on its wings. The engines are very strong and noisy, and the wings are very long. Have you been on a jumbo jet? (p.14)
This is not an airplane. This aircraft is called a helicopter. Helicopters are amazing. They can take off and land in a very small space. They can go straight up and come straight down. They can also hover. We use helicopters for many jobs: they can transport sick people, fight fires, and help lift heavy things. This helicopter is lifting a man out of the water. The helicopter is saving him. He's a very lucky man. (p.16)
To really fly like a bird you need to use a hang glider. Hang gliding is a sport. You fly a hang glider for fun. It's light like a kite, and it has wings like a bird. It doesn't need an engine. It uses the wind to help it glide through the air. To get started, people jump off a mountain or hillside, and they glide on the wind for a long time, like birds. Would you like to try to fly like this one day? (p.18)
This type of flying is very exciting. These skydivers go up in an airplane. They all jump out together with parachutes in their backpacks. They dive out of the airplane into the sky, so it's called skydiving. As they fall through the air, they make shapes with their bodies in the sky. Then they open their parachutes and glide down gently to the ground. It's a dangerous sport, but it's also very exciting. (p.20)
Let's look to the future. How do you think we will fly one hundred years from now? One day, perhaps, people will fly to Mars and back in a spacecraft just like this. Maybe we will even be able to fly to the moon for a vacation. That will be so cool! How do you like to fly? By hot-air balloon, helicopter, hang glider, or jumbo jet? Which do you choose? (p.22)

Let's Go to the Rainforest
Do you know what a rainforest is like? This is a rainforest. The weather here is hot all year. It's called a rainforest because it is always wet. It rains every day. Can you see the tops of the trees? They are in the clouds. It feels hot and sticky. There is so much to see in the rainforest. (p.2)
Let's go to the rainforest and see some of the amazing things that live there. It's not easy to get to the rainforest. First you fly in an airplane. Then you ride in a truck. Then you go in a boat. Finally you walk. Here is a boat on a river in the rainforest. (p.4)
In the rainforest, there are lots and lots of trees. Trees in the rainforest grow very tall. The tops of the trees can reach the clouds. The clouds bring lots of rain. The rain helps the trees to grow. The trees also need sunlight. The tall trees get lots of light. The trees live a long time. They can live a thousand years. (p.6)
Many birds and animals live in the rainforest. The birds build their nests in the tall trees. Sometimes you cannot see them because it is dark under the trees. But you can often hear them. The birds eat the fruit and insects on the trees. The birds in this picture are called parrots. Parrots are colorful birds. (p.8)
What are these strange-looking animals? They have white faces, black noses, and yellow eyes. They also have stripes on their tails. They are a family of lemurs. Lemurs come out at night and they use their big eyes to look for fruit. They also eat leaves, bark, and flowers. Lemurs are very good at climbing trees. How many lemurs can you see? (p.10)
This little animal is a tree frog. Tree frogs are very small, so you must look carefully to see them. This tree frog lives in a flower, in the rainforest. Tree frogs are bright and colorful. How many colors can you see on this frog? This frog has big eyes and a big mouth. Its big eyes help it to see at night, and it uses its big mouth to catch and eat insects. (p.12)
The rainforest is home to millions of ants. Ants are very interesting insects. They are always very busy. Although they are small, they are very strong when they work together as a group. Ants live and work in a big group, like an army. An army of ants can cross a stream and move big things. (p.14)
Insects, insects, they are everywhere. There are more insects in the rainforest than any other animal. Insects are small , but they are very important to the rainforest. They come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Their colors help to hide them and protect them from bigger animals. Each insect is different, but they all have six legs. Some insects crawl, others jump, and others fly. (p.16)
This big cat is a jaguar. It's the king of the rainforest. The jaguar has circles on its fur. It's not easy to see it in the rainforest. It hunts through the trees, using its ears, eyes, and nose to find an animal to eat. It walks very carefully and quietly, and then jumps on the animal. The jaguar has big sharp teeth. It's strong and fast - and very dangerous. (p.18)
It's night-time in the rainforest. The moon is shining. Many animals in the rainforest come out at night. Night-time is a good time to see rainforest animals. What's that? It's a bat! Bat's live in the rainforest, too. Bats sleep in the day and fly around at night. They fly around and look for insects and fruit. (p.20)
There are rainforests in many countries of the world. Is there a rainforest in your country? The rainforest is very important to all of us. It cleans the air, and is home to many animals and plants. If we protect the rainforest, we can help save the world. (p.22)

Wonderful Wild Animals
What is your favorite animal? I don't know. I like so many animals. Animals are really amazing. Wow! It's so cold today! Yes. It's great weather for polar bears. Why do polar bears like the cold? They like to play in the snow. Their thick fur helps to keep them warm. Look at this mother with her two cubs. They don't look cold at all. What animals don't like the cold? (p.2)
Not all animals like cold weather. Look! This dog doesn't like the cold. It's a very cold, unhappy dog. A dog's not a wild animal. Why doesn't it go inside by the fire? It can't. It's a watchdog. I hope it doesn't get sick. It's fine. It has thick fur to keep it warm. Do you like cold weather? (p.4)
Oh no! It's raining. I don't like rainy days. We can't go outside to play. On a day like today, I wish I was a duck. A duck! Why? Ducks like to play in the rain. Their feathers keep them warm and dry, and their feet are made for swimming. What animals don't like the rain? (p.6)
There are many animals that don't like the rain. Look at this smart squirrel. Smart? Why is it smart? See. It's raining but it is not getting wet. It's waiting under its umbrella. What's it waiting for? It's waiting for the rain to stop. And that's not a normal umbrella. It's a leaf. It is a natural umbrella. What a smart squirrel. (p.8)
Here's another smart animal, the elephant. What's that elephant doing in the mud? It's splashing mud on its body. Why? It's getting very dirty. It looks too old to play in the mud! No. It's not playing. It's keeping cool. The mud protects the elephant's skin from the sun. The elephants love a mud bath. It must be a lot of fun. I want to try it one day. (p.10)
Do camels like mud bath, too? No. This camel likes the sun and sand. It lives in the desert under the hot, hot sun. How does it live in the desert? There is a lot of sand and not a lot of water in the desert. It does not need a lot of water, and it has big flat feet to walk on the sand. It has long legs too, so its body is high off the ground. This helps to keep the camel nice and cool. What a good idea. (p.12)
It's getting late. What time is it? It's night-time. The bats are flying around looking for food. But it's so dark! That's perfect for bats. How can they see in the dark? They use sound to help them know where they are going. They also use sound to find things to eat. That's amazing. (p.14)
Bats come out when it's dark because they don't like the light, but other animals like the light. Sunshine is perfect for this crocodile. It looks very comfortable out there on the rock. Why does it like the sunshine? It needs to warm up before it starts the day. It can't move quickly when it's cold. That's because crocodiles have cold blood. When the sun warms the crocodile up, it can move very fast. Watch out! Don't go too close. (p.16)
Do all animals move as fast as crocodiles? No, not all animals. Porcupines don't need to move quickly. They don't look very quick. When something wants to hurt him, what do they do? They use their spines. Their spines are long and sharp. Nothing can hurt them. What a great idea! (p18)
Just look at this family of penguins. Can you see the baby penguin? It looks tired. Where does it sleep? It can sleep anywhere on the snow. Its parents bring it food. What a lucky little penguin. It is like my baby brother. He just likes to eat and sleep. Where do other animals sleep? (p20)
Every animal has its favorite place to sleep. Polar bears sleep under the snow. Squirrels sleep in a tree. Crocodiles sleep by the river. But this little mouse gets its rest in a nice, warm, comfortable nest. I feel so sleepy. I think it's time to climb into my bed and dream about all these wonderful wild animals. Good night. (p22)

Just Like Mine
This is a story about a little girl called Bianca. Bianca is a student in Grade Four. She likes to wear beautiful clothes. Her parents have a lot of money, so Bianca can buy anything she wants. It's four o'clock on Friday afternoon, and it's time to go home. The teacher holds up something. "Are these your sunglasses, Bianca? asked her teacher. "Oh yes! My sunglasses." (p.2)
Outside the school, Bianca's mother and their driver pick her up. Bianca gets into the big car. She looks at her mother and says, "Mommy! Why are you wearing those sunglasses? They are just like mine!" Her mother says, "I'm sorry, Bianca. Let's go shopping to make you happy." Bianca looks at her mother with an unhappy face. (p.4)
When Bianca and her mother arrive at the department store, the driver parks the car, gets out, and opens the door for Bianca. As Bianca gets out, she sees a dog. She is not happy, and says, "Oh no! Look at that dog. It's hair looks just like mine." "I'm sorry, Miss," says the driver. Now Bianca is very unhappy. "I want to be special," says Bianca. She likes to look beautiful and special; she doesn't want to look like a dog. (p.6)
Bianca and her mother walk into the department store. They walk through the shoe department. Bianca is looking at shoes. She is not very happy. "Mommy, look! Those sneakers are just like mine!" "I'm sorry, dear. Let's buy a new pair for you." Bianca's mother has a lot of money. She can buy many pairs of shoes. (p.8)
Mother is carrying her handbag. Bianca is carrying her backpack. They are walking through the clothes department. A girl walks past them. Bianca points at the girl. "You see Mommy! That girl has a pink sweater. It's just like mine. I want a new sweater." "All right, dear," says Mom. She doesn't know why Bianca is so unhappy. (p.10)
Bianca and her mother are in the elevator. They are going to the seventh floor to buy some toys to make Bianca happy. "Why are you so unhappy, dear?" says her mother. "I want to be special Mommy, but I see many things just like mine." Her mother just laughs and says, "Don't be silly, Bianca." (p.12)
In the toy department, they go to look at the dolls. Bianca has many dolls at home, but she always likes to buy more. Bianca talkes a doll off the shelf. Now she is very angry and stomps her foot. "See, Mommy. I am not silly. Look at this doll. She has jeans just like mine. I don't like this doll." Her mother just looks at Bianca. She thinks her daughter is being very silly. "I'm sorry, dear," says Mom. (p.14)
They leave the toy department and go to the sports department. Mother wants to buy a new badminton racket. She goes to the checkout counter to pay for it. "What do you want to buy, Bianca?" asks Mom. Bianca just looks at the shop assistant, and says, "I need a new cap, because this man has one just like mine." The shop assistant looks at Bianca. He doesn't know what to say. "That's fine, dear," says Mom. (p.16)
Bianca's mother is getting tired and thirsty, so they sit down and have something to drink in the cafe. Bianca's mother orders two fruit juices; one for her and one for Bianca. "Why aren't you drinking your juice, Bianca? It's very good," says Mom. "I don't want to drink it, Mommy. I am not thirsty." "Are you sure, dear?" Bianca is thirsty, but she is not happy. She is very, very silly girl. (p.18)
Bianca's mother can see that nothing can make her happy. "It's time to go home, Bianca," she says. "Good idea, Mommy," says Bianca. "Right, Let's go," says Mom. On the escalator, Bianca looks back. She cannot believe her eyes. She sees a woman carrying a backpack like hers. Now she is really unhappy. "You see! she says to her mother. "That woman has a backpack just like mine." Everybody has something just like hers, so she doesn't feel special. Bianca wants to go home right away. (p.20)
As Bianca and her mother are leaving the department store, the woman with the backpack catches up to them. "Excuse me. Is this your backpack?" asked the woman. "It looks just like mine," says Bianca. "Yes, it is mine. Thank you." she says. "You're welcome." Bianca is happy. Maybe she knows just how silly she was. (p.22)

What Did You Do Yesterday?
It's the summer vacation. My friends and I are on holiday, so we don't have to go to school. Let's take a look at what my friends did yesterday. Mark went to the swimming pool yesterday. He went with his father and his sister, Cathy. He can swim but his sister cannot. She was afraid to get into the water. So Mark's father helped her. Mark didn't need help. He swam like a fish, round and round in the pool. Can you swim? (p2)

His friend Steve was mailing a letter to his pen pal in Korea. (p8)
Kate went to the zoo with her friend Rachel yesterday. They are both ten years old, and they like to do everything together. There are many animals in the zoo. They saw lions, elephants, koalas, and monkey. Kate gave a banana to the monkey. The monkey was very happy. He ate the banana and threw the banana peel on the ground. Watch out! Don't slip on the peel. What a naughty monkey! (p10)
This is Maria. She's the smartest girl in my class at school. Maria didn't go to the zoo yesterday, she went to the library. She likes to read. She took home five books! She borrowed storybooks to read. Do you think she can finish reading all those books in a week? (p.12)

Uncle Jerry's Great Idea
Jim is eight years old. He lives with his parents, his sister, and his uncle in a small town. Everybody in Jim's family likes to play sports. Everybody, but not Jim. On Saturday Jim's family went to the park. His father played baseball. His mother played tennis. His sister played basketball. His uncle Jerry played baseball, too. Where was Jim? Can you see him? (p.2)
On Saturday, Jim played baseball, too, but on his computer. That afternoon, when Jim's parents got home, they heard a lot of noise coming from Jim's bedroom. They went upstairs to see what all the noise was about. They opened his door and looked inside. Jim's mother and father were not happy. "He never goes to the park," his mother said quietly. (p.4)
Jim's parents were worried about Jim. They came into Jim's room. "You always stay home on the computer," said his father. "Why don't you come to the park?" "I don't like the park," said Jim, "I like my computer." Now Jim wasn't happy. Uncle Jerry was sad to see Jim unhappy. He wanted to help. Then he had a good idea. (p.6)
Uncle Jerry sat outside with Jim on the steps. "I don't like the park," said Jim. Uncle Jerry wanted to help Jim. He didn't like to see Jim so sad. "I have an idea," said Uncle Jerry. "Next Saturday, bring some paper and a pencil to the park." What is Uncle Jerry's good idea? Can you guess? Can Jim play baseball with a pencil and some paper? What is Jerry's idea? (p.8)
The next Saturday, Jim went to the park. He went to watch his father and uncle play baseball. He remembered to bring his pencil and paper. The game was about to begin. The players were on the field. His father went up to bat. Uncle Jerry whispered in Jim's ear. "Watch us play and count everything we do," said Uncle Jerry. "OK," said Jim. He picked up his pencil and paper and got ready to write. (p.10)
Play ball! The game began. The players threw the ball, they hit the ball, and they caught the ball. "Is it like baseball on the computer?" asked Jim. "Yes. Just count the times we get runs and hits," Uncle Jerry said. So Jim started to count and write. Jim was very busy writing on the paper. He was not sad and he was not bored. (p.12)
The game was very exciting. Everybody played well. Jim watched the game carefully. Then Jim's father hit a long home run! Everybody clapped and cheered. Jim's father ran to first base, then to second base, then to third base, and finally to home base. He was very happy. "Count the home runs, too!" said Uncle Jerry. "OK. Great idea," said Jim. (p.14)
After the game they all went home. After a good time at the park, they were all tired, but they were all happy. Jim was happy, too. Uncle Jerry said to Jim, "Go and make a chart on your computer." "OK," said Jim, and he ran up to his room with his piece of paper. Jim is good at using computers, and he knew just what to do. (p.16)
Jim used his computer to make a chart. He typed in all the numbers on his paper. After fifteen minutes, he was finished. He printed his chart out on the printer. This is Jim's chart. Look at the numbers. Well done, Jim. Who made the most runs? Did Uncle Jerry hit a home run? (p.18)
Everybody took a shower and put on some clean clothes. It was time for lunch. Everybody was in the dining room. At lunch, Jim gave the chart to his father. His father looked at the chart carefully. "This is great! I really like it!" said his father. Jim had a big smile on his face. Uncle Jerry was happy, too. He was happy and very, very hungry. (p.20)
On Saturday morning, everybody was off to the park again. This time Jim was going to the park, too. "Can you do one for basketball, please? asked his sister. "Yes," said Jim. Uncle Jerry smiled. It was a very good idea. Now Jim goes to the park every Saturday, and he always brings paper and a pencil. (p.22)

New Girl in School Level 3
Fairly easy short story. The hard time is after reading the story, everyone has to tell it in their own words. This exercise is to improve the students speaking ability.
Emma is a student at Riverside School. One day when Emma was in Grade Four, a strange new student came to the school. "Emma, this is Linda," said Miss Taylor. "She's a new student. Please take her to Class 4C." Emma was in class 4C, so she knew exactly where to go. "Yes, Miss Taylor. I like your bag, Linda." "Thank you." Linda had a very special bag.
It was Thursday. Class 4C had art class on Thursday. Everybody was painting pictures. Linda was painting in a very special way. "What are you painting, Linda?" asked Peter. "I'm painting some flowers." "Wow! How do you do that?" "I look at the brushes, then I look at the paint." Only Linda could paint this way. Her classmates couldn't believe their eyes. Wow! It was magic!
It was ten thirty. The students have a fifteen-minute recess at ten thirty every morning. The children were in the yard. "I'm skipping," said Emma. She was skipping with a jump rope. "I'm jumping," said Peter. He can jump like a kangaroo. "I'm flying," said Linda. "Fly with me." Linda was a very strange student. "We can't fly, Linda!" Only Linda could fly like a bird. What a pity!" Her classmates couldn't believe their eyes. Wow! It was magic.
It was eleven o'clock. The students had music class at eleven o'clock on Thursday. "Let's play some music," said Linda. "I can play the piano, the violin, and the drums." Her classmates couldn't believe it. Wow! It was magic! "I can play the flute," said Emma. "I can play the guitar," said Peter. So Linda's classmates could play with her. "Let's go," said Linda. Linda played well, Emma and Peter played well, too. It sounded very good.
It was twelve o'clock and lunchtime for the students. "I'm very hungry," said Linda. "I want a cookie. Emma and Peter, do you want a cookie, too?" "Yes please, Linda," they said. Linda clicked her fingers and three cookies came flying through the air. "Here you are. One for you, one for you, and one for me." Her classmates couldn't believe their eyes. Wow! It was magic!
After lunch the students had math class. Their math teacher was Mrs. Young. "Linda, why are there ducks on your desk?" asked Mrs. Young. "I'm counting, Mrs. Young. Two frogs and three frogs is five frogs. How many ducks are there? One, two, three, four..." Mrs. Young couldn't believe her eyes. Wow! It was magic!
It was one thirty in the afternoon. Time for P.E. class. The children were in the gym. "Can you play basketball, Linda?" asked Peter. "Yes, I can, Peter. Watch." Linda threw the ball. It bounced off some of the children playing. "Ouch! That's my knee." "Ouch! That's my elbow." "Ouch! That's my head." And then it bounced into the hoop. The students could not believe their eyes. Wow! It was magic!
After P.E., class 4C went to the library to read books. It was three o'clock and time for the students to go back to their classroom. "What a mess! Let's help the teacher," said Emma. "OK. You put the chairs back, and I can put the books away(책을 치운다)," said Linda. "Thank you, girls," said Mrs. Young. She could not believe her eyes. "That's great!" Linda was a very special student.
It was three thirty in the afternoon. Miss Taylor went to class 4C to look for Linda. "Linda, please come to the office," said Miss Taylor. "Now, where did she go?" Linda was not in the classroom. She could disappear just like that. "I'm here, Miss Taylor. I'm in the office!" Miss Taylor could not believe her eyes! Wow! It was magic.
Linda's mother was in Miss Taylor's office. "Hello, Mom," said Linda. She could not understand. Why was her Mom here? "What's the matter?" "I'm sorry, Linda," said her Mom. "This is the wrong school for you. You must go to the Magic School, not this school."
It was four o'clock and time to go home. Linda and her mother were outside with Class 4C. "I'm going to my new school now," said Linda. "Goodbye, Emma and Peter. Goodbye, Class 4C. Goodbye Mrs. Young." "Goodbye, Linda. It was fun!" Linda and her mother flew off, up, up, and away. The students could now believe their eyes. They had to, Wow! It really was magic.
